Memories and How to Get Them

I am dealing with the sequence of assumption, feeling and reflection. Personal reality is a construct of different subjective experiences and influences. The individual reality combines with memories, which are, for their part, a construct.

The senses take only a limited snap shot of their surroundings, whilst at the same time trying to build a coherent image of them. The brain is using a principle of construction to get this ‘overall view’ from fragments (which are not necessarily dependent on truth). In philosophy, memory and imagination have always been inseparable.

As raw material I’ve used found 8mm movie footage. These movies were mainly produced as a document of an experienced present. At the same time the footage is part of the raw material for the memories of the filmmaker. In particular, if the movies have been watched repetitively, these physical images merge more and more with the mental images in the conscious memory.

My technical approach gives the impression of motion to my pictures as well as a latent and fragmentary look. They are vague and indistinct, remaining between two moments.
